Bavaria adds Moscow, Belgium to Cannes slate

Bavaria Film International has picked up worldwide distribution rights (outside of Benelux) to Christophe van Rompaey’s feature film debut Moscow, Belgium, which will be presented in the Critics’ Week in Cannes, with several screenings taking place between 15 and 19 May.

Left Bank competes in Edinburgh

Pieter Van Hees' feature film debut Left Bank has been selected for Competition at the Edinburgh International Film Festival (20-29 June 2008). Van Hees will attend the international premiere of his film.

Moscow, Belgium selected for Critics' Week

Christophe Van Rompaey's feature film debut, Moscow, Belgium, has been selected for the International Critics' Week of the 61st Cannes International Film Festival, which takes place from 14-25 May 2008.

Annecy selects Flanders best

Shoes on the Menu, an episode of animated kids series The Incredible Adventures of Kika & Bob, has been selected for this year’s Annecy International Animation Film Festival (9-14 June). The Kika & Bob episode will be shown in the Animated Series Competition. Also competing, in the Student Film Competition, are Passe-vite by Bert Dombrecht, Korneel Detailleur and Ben Verschooris; Yves by Joost Jansen; and The Traveller by Johan Pollefoort.

Ben X double victory in Sedona

Nic Balthazar's feature film debut Ben X was awarded the Award for Best Foreign Language Film by the jury and the festival's audience at the International Film Festival in Sedona (US, 27 February – 2 March 2008).

With Friends Like These triumphs in Alba

Felix van Groeningen's With Friends Like These has won the Albacinemaprize at the Alba International Film Festival (7 - 12 March 2008). The award consists of 10,000 euros to be divided between the director and the producer, Academy Award nominee Dirk Impens.

Tanghi Argentini claims new victories

At the Boulder International Film Festival (14 - 17 February 2008) the Academy Award nominated short Tanghi Argentini won the Prize for Best Short. Guido Thys' short won also the Best Cinematography Award and Best Short Film award at the Byron Bay Film Festival (29 February - 8 March 2008).

Flanders' shorts top at Clermont-Ferrand

At the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival (1-9 February 2008) the shorts Plot Point and Mumbler won the Special Jury Prize. The latter was also honoured with a mention by the festival’s young jury.

Tanghi gets Oscar nomination

Guido Thys’ multi-award-winning short Tanghi Argentini is nominated for this year’s Oscar for Best Live-Action Short, it was announced by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) on 22 January. Scripted by Geert Verbanck and produced by Anja Daelemans and Dries Phlypo for Another Dimension of an Idea, the film is a modern fairy tale about an office clerk and his attempts to make his colleagues happy. But instead of the classical cliché Christmas gifts, he wants to give them something real and precious.

Ben X to Berlin

Nic Balthazar's feature film debut Ben X is selected to compete in Generations 14plus at the Berlin International Film Festival (7 – 17 February 2008). 13 Februari is the Berlin premiere. Balthazar, as well as the film's producer Peter Bouckaert and lead actor Greg Timmermans will attend the 13 February première at the Berlinale. Generation 14+ is the programme aimed at presenting the most exciting films to the Berlinale's younger audiences.

Flanders films break unbreakable admissions record in 2007

Flanders films have broken the 2003 admissions record which longtime was considered to be unbreakable. With still one title to go in release next week, close to 1,135,000 cinemagoers already went to see an indigenous production this year. In 2003, 1,048,280 paying cinemagoers were registered at screenings of indigenous films.

Provost's Plot Point wins in Vend�me

Nicolas Provost's short Plot Point has won the Grand Prix for Best European Film at the Vendôme Short Film Festival (30 November – 7 December 2007). Plot Point and some of his other work is selected for the Film Festivals in Rotterdam and Sundance next year.
